Suicide in China

Suicide is a global issue. According to statistics, there will be one person in the world who dies of suicide every 40 seconds. Suicide does not only occur in high-income countries, which is a global situation all over the world and of all ages. In fact, according to the investigation, 79 percent of global suicides happen in low and middle-income countries, and the cases of suicide attempted is many times more than the number of suicides committed. China’s youth suicide rate ranks first in the world and suicide has become the second leading cause of death among Chinese teenagers.
The first type is caused by the conflict between teachers and students. In China’s exam-oriented education, not only children are under pressure, but also teachers are oppressed by “performance indicators”. Leading to anxiety, teachers bring negative emotions to children in extreme ways and make students the ultimate victims. It is that teachers and students no longer have care and respect, but use violence and humiliation to solve the problem. For students, the lack of teachers’ care leads to the loss of desire for learning and the sudden increase of pressure make them more likely to commit suicide because they cannot bear the pressure.
The second type is caused by family conflict. Parents pay too much attention to the results of children’s rebelliousness or weariness of school. Sometimes the parents’ criticism will hurt the children’s self-esteem, making the children commit suicide because they dare not resist. The reason why children commit suicide is more to resist, and they commit suicide in anger when they are emotional. Their logic is that if you don’t understand them, they will commit suicide and make you regret it. Young people’s feelings of love are very vague. When they are angry, their emotions are uncontrollable. It is no doubt that suicide is caused by a temporary impulse.
The third type is caused by academic pressure. Examination-oriented education pays too much attention to achievement, which leads to children’s illusion of their own value, considering whether their performance is good or not is their own value. Overloaded homework causes children to be anxious and nervous. If their scores are maintained at a high level at this time, maybe this sense of achievement will make the children resist the pressure. Once the scores decrease, the distorted values will lead the children to think that they have lost their value. In addition, the accumulated pressure will burst out and lead to the child’s suicide.
The fourth type is caused by puppy love. The ignorance of love in adolescence inevitably leads to puppy love. The feudal ideas of the parents made it too restrictive for their children. According to the survey, many teenagers’ psychological problems are caused by puppy love. Usually, Chinese parents do not have the correct guidance for puppy love, but by imposing various restrictions, eventually, making their children cannot bear the oppression and commit suicide.
In general, the pressure brought by exam-oriented education and puppy love are the main causes of adolescent suicide. Parents and schools pay too much attention to the results, which impose too many restrictions on children, greatly limiting the children’s entertainment. For children, parents and school are already their “whole world”, and since both of them are exerting pressure on them, the children cannot bear it. The focus on academic performance makes parents have almost abnormal restrictions on their children. Puppy love is also considered as a major factor affecting children’s performance by their parents. However, correct guidance is much better than mindless restriction. For children, they can only have youth once. They should try to have more experience under the condition of performance guarantee. Puppy love is not a bad thing. Early contact with love allows children to have a correct understanding of love. More experience can also make children more mature and face the world better after graduation. For most parents in China, the college entrance examination is an opportunity to change their children’s fate, and personal achievement is one of the indicators to show the value of a person. But for a child, or everyone, the most important thing is never a certain exam or something else. No matter if it is the entrance examination for junior school or high school, it can change the fate of an individual. The most important thing in life should be the average distribution of each day, living in the moment, feeling life, rather than relying on grades to change fate. Because most of the parents have not received much education, they have distorted ideas about their children’s education. I believe that the new generation can do better when they become parents in the future.
